A long standing tradition for many families around Christmas is the hanging of the Felt Christmas stocking by the fireplace or mantle or whatever spot works best in your home. How did this tradition come to fruition? In watching the cartoon movie “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, they explain that stockings were hung by the fire to dry them after washing. Because the Burgermeister tried to prevent Kris Kringle from bringing toys to all the boys and girls, Kris found a way to sneak them into their stockings that were hanging by the fire. But is that the real history?

There are many versions of how the Christmas stocking came to be. One version dates back to the 16th century and is about an English nobleman who last his wife and had three daughters to raise. He ended up also losing his fortune through bad business decisions. He had three daughters who could not be married off because he had no dowry to offer since he was broke. As Saint Nicholas was passing through the village where they lived, he heard of the nobleman’s misfortune. Because St. Nicholas was a kind and giving man, he slipped into the hose late at night by going down the chimney and left a bag of gold coins in each of the girls freshly washed stockings that were hanging by the fireplace to dry. As the story goes, the daughters were able to marry off and they all lived happily ever after.

This is a great story when the ending is happy. To this day, stockings have been hung by the fireplace for Kris Kringle or Santa as we more commonly know him today to stuff with wonderful little treats and prizes.

Many people have made this tradition a very special one by hanging up decorated stockings, fancy stockings or just plain ones that are personalized. The most common type of stocking is a felt Christmas stocking. You can get these here online or at many retail stores. They come in many different sizes, colors and decorations. Personalized Christmas stockings make a wonderful Christmas (or Christmas Eve) gift!

Once you’ve bought your felt Christmas stockings what should you fill them with? Well, you can fill them with any type of small present or prize that will fit. Remember that great prizes can come in small packages. At my house, we usually fill our Christmas stockings with hair bands and bows, small trinkets needed for school, gum, candy and I always try to have one special small gift in there too, like a beautiful necklace or ring or some type of jewelry. We fill our doggies’ stockings with dog bones and treats, but they usually get theirs early! Lotions, cologne, and other small yet needed gifts like socks or undies make great stocking stuffers too. But whatever you choose, you will surely bring a smile to their faces because they will be happy to not be getting coal in their Christmas Sock!
